Fishing Lake of the Woods (South) - Minnesota

Seated right on the Canadian border, the 50-plus-mile-wide Lake of the Woods tempts fishermen with more than 60,000 miles of shoreline and nearly 15,000 islands, which are home to many a trophy walleye, musky, and pike, as well as large populations of bass and crappie.

The open waters and islands of the lake’s Northwest Angle contain a high volume of many different species, particularly musky and walleye. Meanwhile, the lake’s south shore provides great opportunities for walleye and pike in the warm months, and ideal ice-fishing conditions in the winter. The Rainy River, which connects Lake of the Woods to Rainy Lake, is a hot pot for pre-spawn walleyes in the spring.

Lake of the Woods and the surrounding forests provide many other activities to round out a fishing vacation, including boating, camping, hunting, and wildlife watching. The wildflowers are simply amazing along Highway 11, and have earned the road a designation as an official state wildflower route. Bring your snowmobile in the winter and cruise hundreds of miles of groomed trails (and take a tour of Polaris Industries’ plant – something every sled-head is bound to find interesting).

Stay in one of several four-season lodges, or pitch your tent at one of the many remote wilderness camps that dot the boundary waters. The towns of Baudette and Warroad offer motels and hotels, as well as dining and shopping for equipment, daily necessities, gifts, and more.
